Duke Ellington’s Black and Tan Fantasy

Musical Inspiration for Film and Crime Fiction

Back in France! After my whirlwind visit to Munich, Provence welcomed me with gray skies and a semi-torrential downpour. Even so, the clouds added a beautiful layer to the landscape here, deepening the autumn colors and scents.

As soon as I returned, I dove back into writing. I’m working on a short story set in 1920s New York, centered on a bold theft in a chic art gallery. The crime unfolds during a glamorous VIP reception, with a live jazz band filling the air with moody, irresistible music. To set the scene, I imagined what piece the band would play, and naturally, I landed on Black and Tan Fantasya 1927 jazz composition by Duke Ellington and Bubber Miley.

The Music

Black and Tan Fantasy is an unforgettable, haunting blues number with Ellington’s signature flair for drama. It’s a song of contrasts, like Harlem itself during that vibrant era—a place of elegance and grit, of celebration and longing.

If you haven't heard Black and Tan Fantasy, then give it a listen; you’ll hear what I mean. The piece is like a musical noir, unfolding with layers of mystery and mood.

The Film

I also highly recommend the 1929 short film Black and Tan. Directed by Dudley Murphy, it was one of the first films to spotlight black musicians as the leading characters, rather than background entertainers. Duke Ellington himself stars, offering viewers an intimate glimpse into his style and charm. Murphy’s direction captures the energy of Harlem’s jazz scene through light and shadow. At just around 20 minutes long, it’s a must-see for jazz and noir lovers alike.

This film marks the first on-screen appearance of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. In it, Duke's friends—played by trumpet player Arthur Whetsol and actress Fredi Washington—step in when bill collectors try to seize his piano.

The film also visits the vibrant Harlem nightclub scene of the 1920s, featuring dazzling performances of "The Duke Steps Out," "Black Beauty," "Cotton Club Stomp," "Hot Feet," and, of course, Black and Tan Fantasy. Read more about it here.
