By Lanie Price, Society Reporter
NEW YORK, July 13, 1924—Theodora Finch, a revered spiritualist known for her profound impact on the Harlem community and her generous support for numerous community projects, died unexpectedly on the evening of July 12th. She was 32.
Born in 1892, Finch grew up in a modest household in St. Louis, MO, but her indomitable spirit and keen intellect set her apart from an early age. She moved to Harlem in her early twenties. Over the years, Theo became a central figure in Harlem's spiritual and social circles, known for her captivating séances and her ability to connect with the otherworldly.
Finch’s séances were more than mere parlor tricks; they were theatrical performances that drew the elite and curious alike. Her deep, expressive eyes seemed to peer into the souls of her clients, offering comfort and guidance from beyond. She often wore elaborate gowns and ornate turbans, her presence exuding an air of elegance and mystique.
Beyond her work as a spiritualist, Finch was a tireless advocate for her community. She funded the construction of neighborhood clinics, schools, and libraries, believing that education and good healthcare were the cornerstones of a thriving society. Her home on Strivers' Row was not just a place of spiritual inquiry but also a hub for intellectual and cultural exchange.
Finch’s untimely death has left the community in shock and mourning. She was hosting a gathering at her home to discuss the construction of a new elementary school when tragedy struck. As she activated her prized electric scrying mirror, the device malfunctioned, resulting in a fatal electrocution.
The exact circumstances of her death remain unclear, and authorities are investigating the possibility of foul play.
Finch is survived by her younger half-brother, Nathan Grant, and a wide circle of friends, admirers, and clients who were touched by her wisdom and generosity. Her legacy lives on in the many community projects she supported and in the hearts of those who believed in her spiritual guidance.
A memorial service will be held at the Abyssinian Baptist Church, followed by a private burial. The Harlem community mourns the loss of a visionary and a beloved spiritual guide, whose presence will be profoundly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Theodora Finch Memorial Fund, dedicated to continuing her work in education and community development.
