Rent Party Menu

Rent Pary Card

Back in the day, folks used to hold house parties to raise money for the rent. They’d offer music, liquor (illegal ‘hooch’ since it was Prohibition) and food, and charge an admission fee. These get-togethers were also called social whist parties, “parlor socials,” “struggles,” “break-downs,” “flop-wallies,” “chitterling parties,” “razor drills,” “too terrible” and “too bad” parties. Poet Langston Hughes saved the above-card. Read more about his collection of such cards here and see more examples with this search here.
